“We really wanted our wedding to be a simple, informal day which brought all of our friends and family together.”
Last April, I photographed Catrin and David’s mid-Wales wedding at the small Catholic church in Rhayader, followed by their big reception for extended family and friends at the beautiful country location of Broneirion in Llandinam. This was my kind of wedding – Catrin and David really understood the value of documentary wedding photography, and it seemed that they really valued being able to spend the day with their guests rather than being posed by a photographer in a lengthy photo-shoot. I asked Catrin for her thoughts on the day:
“When David and I got engaged we decided that we really wanted our wedding to be a simple, informal day which brought all of our friends and family together. I wanted to get married from my childhood home, in my childhood church and share everything that I loved about Mid Wales with our guests. We chose Broneirion for our reception for its stunning Welsh scenery, warm, comfy atmosphere, a marquee which we could customise to our tastes and some irresistibly quirky extras in the form of a fire pit and a agility course (for the ‘kids’!). David wore navy tweed, and I wore a simple vintage-inspired Jenny Packham dress hired from a wonderful Cardiff store To Have and To Hire, I was aiming for easy elegance and the freedom to dance like a loon! Tom’s style of photography fitted our vision perfectly. He managed to capture our day without pulling us out of it for any prolonged posing sessions. The happiness we were feeling seems to radiate out of every shot.
“One of the best ideas we had on our wedding day was to stop on the way from the reception at the valley where we got engaged. We were given some brilliant advice that we should make some time to spend quietly together after the ceremony, a chance to breathe and savour the moment before the party got started. We went for a little wander with a bottle of bubbly, and invited Tom to follow us. The photos from this walk are some of my favourite from the whole day. They are so whimsically romantic. We had the most amazing time at our wedding and the photos Tom took for us emit an honest sense of friends, family and fun which is exactly what we hoped for when we first planned our special day.”
